How to Make a

Felt Appliqué Heart Rainbow

Craft, learn how, sewing, whip stitch, pride, love heart.

Hello and thank you for choosing to make my Hanging Rainbow Heart tutorial

The following written and photographic instructions will help you to re-create this colourful decoration, which will provide pleasure and share cheer for all who see it.

This is the perfect project to make for yourself, or to give as a gift for family and friends.

I have designed this hanging heart to be hand sewn from felt; however, it could just as easily be created from coloured or plain paper, with glue and felt tips. You can be as creative as you want with the varying shaped heart templates.

I have designed and uploaded temaplates for these seven heart shapes, each shape reducing in size and building on top of the next to make a two dimential heart.

This is a perfect decoration to adorn a window, an office, or hang in a gender neutral bedroom or any room which needs a splash of vibrancy and colour.

You will Need:

1. Felt and matching thread - for a traditional rainbow, I have used Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Violet and choose a colour for the back of the heart. I have used teal.

2. Sewing needle (wide enough for triple thread strands).

3. Scissors

4. Pins

5. Stuffing

6. Ribbon (for hanging)

7. PDF Print-out of pattern pieces (7 individual hearts - reducing in size)

How to Make the

Felt Appliqué Heart Rainbow

1. Print the PDF sheets with the template for the Heart shape patterns: Click on the above links for the printable PDF's

2. Begin by cutting the shapes from the print out and pin on to the relevent coloured felt; cut out each shape. I have designed the shapes to reduce equally in size so they can be placed on top of each other, each heart reducing in size and sewn as an applique to the previous heart. Each heart is attached seperately using correspondoing coloured thread (note: you could use fabric glue)

3. Start with the Red Heart Shape and the Orange Heart shape; place the orange felt heart shape on top of the red heart shape (as the image below). Pin the felt shapes in place and and sew with orange thread (3 ply) using the whipped stitch. See Video below: "How to sew using whip stitch felt applique's on to another shape"

4. Place the Yellow felt heart shape on top of the Orange heart shape (as the image below). Pin the felt shapes in place and and sew with Yellow thread (3 ply) using the whipped stitch. See Video above: "How to sew using whip stitch felt applique's on to another shape"

5. Place the Green felt heart shape on top of the Yellow heart shape (as the image below). Pin the felt shapes in place and and sew with Green thread (3 ply) using the whipped stitch. See Video above: "How to sew using whip stitch felt applique's on to another shape"

6. Place the Blue felt heart shape on top of the Green heart shape (as the image below). Pin the felt shapes in place and and sew with Blue thread (3 ply) using the whipped stitch. See Video above: "How to sew using whip stitch felt applique's on to another shape"

7. Place the Purple felt heart shape on top of the Yellow heart shape (as the image below). Pin the felt shapes in place and and sew with Purple thread (3 ply) using the whipped stitch. See Video above: "How to sew using whip stitch felt applique's on to another shape"

8. Place the Violet felt heart shape on top of the purple heart shape (as the image below). Pin the felt shapes in place and and sew with Violet thread (3 ply) using the whipped stitch. See Video above: "How to sew using whip stitch felt applique's on to another shape"

Finishing Steps:

adding the ribbon, padding/stuffing and sew the backing onto your heart

9. Turn your Appliqued heart over, so you have the back facing you. Cut a length of ribbon, long enough to hand your Heart. Pin your ribbon into place and stitch in place (you do not need to be too neat, just ensure it is secure). See photo below

10. Place your backing on top of your applique heart and pin partially into place as the photo image.

11. Sew the back of the heart to the applique heart, starting from the bottom of the heart, working round to the top half of the heart. I have used Red thread so it blends with the front of the heart. You may want to use a contrasting colour.

I have used the whip stitch, which is ideal for this type of project. It is a slightly different process than sewing felt applique to each other; so please see the video instructions below.

You will need to sew half of the heart first and then pad the heart using your stuffing material. I have not jam packed my stuffing in, I wanted a light padding for a 3D effect. see photo below.

13. Once you have added your stuffing into the first half of the heart you can proceed with your whip stitching around the heart. I pinned part of the heart to begin with, which ensures you keep an even stitch and felt placement.

Tip: when sewing over the ribbon I used a couple of tacking stitches.

Take the threaded needle through both sides of the felt and the ribbon sandwiched between; front to back and then back to front.

You will only need a couple of small tacking stitches and then start back with the whipping stitch.

Tip: for the final part of the heart, I stuffed the heart as I went., adding a little stuffing and then sew a little further.

You can use a blunt end of pencil to push the stuffing into edges of the heart to get a crisp and even packing.

Your heart is finished - I do hope you have enjoyed it. All you need to do now is find a special place to hang it or a special person to gift it too.

Three Perfectly Pretty Daisies

Welcome to my New Crochet Tutorial :

I think you will love making these beautiful Spring / Summer Daisies.

My pretty 'Trio Of Daisies Design' enables you to, make a 6 petal, 8 petal and 10 petal daisy flower each building on the other.

I have designed these daisies using 100% cotton, mainly because it holds the crisp shape of my daisy, can be machine washed and dried with ease, whilst retaining the perfect shape and colour of the Daisy.

This is a wonderful, easy, versatile pattern, you can play with colour, yarn ply and hook size to make variations of this daisy.

I have the daisies with a simple edging making them easily, compatible for sewing them onto other items as a beautiful motif / appliqué, adding detail to a project or sewing together to make various decorations.

My pretty Daisies are easy & quick to make; and great for using up your ‘odds and ends’ of scrap yarn. They are hugely versatile and can be used as basic motifs

I will also be using this basic pattern to make many wonderful & beautiful projects, for all seasons and events. So stay in touch.

For this tutorial you will need the following materials:

Double Knit / Light Worsted Weight - 100% Cotton Yarn: 4.5 metre’s (approx 5 Yards) Yellow Yarn (Centre Circle of Flower) - 10 metre’s (approx 11 Yards) White Yarn (Petals of Flower)
Size 4 mm (Metric), 6 (USA), 8 (UK) Crochet Hook
Yarn Needle & Scissors
Stitch marker (optional) Tip: I often use a contrasting piece of yarn as a stitch marker it’s just as effective.

Six Petal Daisy

Round 1) 6 sc (UK dc) in the Adjustable Ring join with a sl st {Total: (6 sc) (UK 6 dc)}

Tip: It can be very useful at this stage to use a stitch marker. Attach to the slip stitch and move up after each round.

Eight Petal Daisy

Round 1) 6 sc (UK dc) in the Adjustable Ring join with a sl st {Total: (6 sc) (UK 6 dc)}

Tip: It can be very useful at this stage to use a stitch marker. Attach to the slip stitch and move up after each round.

Round 2) 2 sc (UK dc) in each st, rpt to end. Ending with a sl st into previous sl st rnd 1 {Total (12 sc) (UK 12 dc)}

Round 3) *2 sc (UK dc) in next st, sc (UK dc) in next st*, rep from * to * around; Ending with a sl st into previous sl st in rnd 2. {Total (18 sc) (UK 18 dc).

Round 4) *2 sc (UK dc) in next st, sc (UK dc) in next 2 sts*, rep from * to * around; Ending with a sl st into previous sl st in rnd 3. . {Total (24 sc) (UK 24 dc).

End with a slp st and fasten Off. Follow instructions for adding the Daisy Petals (round 6)

Ten Petal Daisy

Round 1) 6 sc (UK dc) in the Adjustable Ring join with a sl st {Total: (6 sc) (UK 6 dc)}

Round 2) 2 sc (UK dc) in each st, rpt to end. Ending with a sl st into previous sl st rnd 1 {Total (12 sc) (UK 12 dc)}

Round 3) *2 sc (UK dc) in next st, sc (UK dc) in next st*, rep from * to * around; Ending with a sl st into previous sl st in rnd 2. {Total (18 sc) (UK 18 dc).

Round 4) *2 sc (UK dc) in next st, sc (UK dc) in next 2 sts*, rep from * to * around; Ending with a sl st into previous sl st in rnd 3. . {Total (24 sc) (UK 24 dc).

Round 5) *2 sc (UK dc) in next st, sc (UK dc) in next 3 sts*, rep from * to * around; Ending with a sl st into previous sl st in rnd 4. {Total (30 sc) (UK 30 dc).

Fasten off Yellow Yarn.

Daisy Petals ~ Using White yarn

Round 6) Join the white yarn with a sl st in any st, ch 1, sc (UK dc) in same st as joining, in next st work: (sc, ch 5, sc in 4^th ch from hook & sc in last ch, end with a sc in same st as 1^st sc) (UK dc, ch 5, dc in 4^th ch from hook & dc in last ch. End with a dc in same st as 1^st dc). {This sequence completes the centre of the first of 6,8 or 10 petals}, sc (UK dc) in next st, ch 1, *sc (UK dc) in next st, in next st work: (sc, ch 5, sc in 4^th ch from hook & sc in last ch, then sc in same st as 1^st sc), sc in next st, ch 1*, (*UK dc, ch 5, dc in 4^th ch from hook & dc in last ch. End with a dc in same st as 1^st dc*). repeat from * to * around, join with a sl st to beg sc. (40 sc (UK dc) around (not including petal centre’s), 10 x ch-1 spaces, & 10 x petal centre’s)

Round 7) Sk the first 2 sc sts (UK dc sts), then working up the right side of the first petal: hdc & dc (UK htr & tr) in first st, 2 dc (UK 2 tr) in next st, 4 dc (UK 4 tr) in space at the top of petal, then working down the left side of the petal, 2 dc (UK 2 tr) in next st, dc & hdc (UK htr & tr) in last st. Skip next 2 sc sts (UK dc sts), sl st in ch x1 space, *sk the next 2 sc sts (UK dc sts), then work up the right side of the next petal, hdc & dc (UK htr & tr) in first st, 2 dc (UK 2 tr) in next st, 4 dc (UK 4 tr) in space at the top of petal, then in first st, 2 dc (UK 2 tr) in next st, 4 dc (UK 4 tr) in space at the top of the petal, then work down the left side of the petal, 2 dc (UK 2 tr) in next st, dc & hdc (UK htr & tr) in last st, skip next 2 sc sts (UK 2 dc sts) on round, sl st in ch x1 space*; Repeat from * to * around. Fasten off and sew all ends in.

Finally: Gently iron your Darling Daisy, sit back and admire your wonderful creation. Why not try and experiment with various pastel colours or bold, vibrant colours.
