How to make a Felt Rainbow and Rain Cloud

A step-by-step tutorial on how to make a:

Felt Rainbow, with Clouds, Rain Drops and Sunshine.

Hello, welcome and thank you for choosing to make my 'Hanging Rainbow' tutorial.

The following written and photographic instructions will help you to re-create this colourful decoration, which will provide pleasure and share cheer for all who see it.

This is the  perfect project to make for yourself, or to give as a gift for family and friends.

I have designed this garland to be hand sewn from felt; however, it could just as easily be created from coloured or plain paper, with glue and felt tips. So be creative.

I have designed and uploaded three seperate templates, for the rainbow, the clouds and raindrops and the sun. You can add as many or as little embelishment to your rainbow.

A perfect decoration to adorn a window, an office, or hang in a gender neutral bedroom or any room which which needs a splash of vibrancy and colour.

Please enjoy 😊😊 I would love to see your finished projects, so... feel free to share your finished projects.

You will need:

1. Felt and matching thread - (for traditional rainbow) I have used Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Violet and White for the clouds.

2. Sewing needle (wide enough for double and triple thread strands)

3. scissors

4. pins

5. Little stuffing (for clouds) I used cotton wool 7. Ribbon (for hanging)

6. PDF Print Out of pattern pieces (additional thanks to Katie Craig (Our youngest bear) who helped with the math for the rainbow shapes)

How to make the Felt Rainbow

Print out the PDF sheets with the pattern for the rainbow shapes.

1. Main Rainbow template : Click on link for the printable PDF - Rainbow printable template 1:3

2. The rainbow shapes template: Click on link for the printable PDF - Rainbow printable template 2:3

4. The Clouds, Raindrops and Sun templates: Click on link for the printable PDF - Rainbow Clouds, Raindrops and Sunshine printable template

Begin by cutting the shapes from the print out and pin to the relevent colour felt; cut out each shape. I have designed the shapes to have a 1/2 cm overlap, each shape is attached seperately using corresponding coloured thread (note: you could use fabric glue)

1. Start with the red rainbow shape and blanket stitch around the outside curve of the felt *note: I used embroidery thread -3 ply thread.

See my Youtube tutorial on how to on How to sew Blanket stitch, click on the link πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡ :

2. Pin the (smaller) orange felt shape on top of the (main) red shape, precision is important if you want a neat rainbow πŸ˜‰. Then stitch into place with orange thread using a simple 'running stitch' *note: I used embroidery thread - 3 ply)

(see video Below) πŸ‘‡  https://youtu.be/4BJV4JmtHv0?t=21

3. Pin the (smaller) yellow felt shape on top of the orange shape, again precision is important if you want a neat rainbow πŸ˜‰. Then stitch into place with yellow thread using a simple 'running stitch' as in the video above. (see photo). *note: I used embroidery thread - 3 ply)

4. Pin the (smaller) green felt shape on top of the orange shape; remember, precision is important if you want a neat rainbow πŸ˜‰. Then stitch into place with green thread using a simple 'running stitch' as in the video above (see photo). *note: I used embroidery thread - 3 ply)

5. Pin the (smaller) blue felt shape on top of the green shape, again precision is important if you want a neat rainbow πŸ˜‰. Then stitch into place with blue thread using a simple 'running stitch' as in the video - (see photo). *note: I used embroidery thread - 3 ply)

6. Pin the (smaller) purple felt shape on top of the blue shape, again precision is important if you want a neat rainbow πŸ˜‰. Then stitch into place with purple thread using a simple 'running stitch' (see photo). *note: I used embroidery thread - 3 ply)

7. Finally, pin the (smallest) violet felt shape on top of the purple shape, again precision is important if you want a neat rainbow πŸ˜‰. Then stitch into place with yellow thread using a simple 'running stitch' (see photo). *note: I used embroidery thread - 3 ply

8. Tidy up any overlap that does not quiet line up... and Bravo πŸ™‹ you have successefully made a rainbow. Now to make and add the clouds.

9. Finally and an optional choice which replaces step one (omitting the blanket stitching at the begining) and adding a backing piece of red felt, which is attached using the blanket stitch. Please see the photo below πŸ‘‡

How to make

the Felt Clouds, the Rain Drops and Sunshine

Print out the PDF sheets with the pattern for the the left and right cloud shapes, the 7 x rain drops and the Sun.

Lets start with the clouds...

1. Begin by cutting the shapes from the print out and pin to the white felt. Please note that you need to double the felt, so fold the felt in half and you will have and exact double of each cloud shape, cut out each cloud from the felt. Then cut out some padding, roughy the same shape as your cloud, but smaller.

2. Both left and right clouds are sewn together using white thread, using the blanket stitch method: see the video tutorial above. (note: you could use fabric glue).

Starting with left cloud, pin the two identical pieces of felt together and stitch together, with white thread, using the blanket stitch (see video tutorial above): *note: I used embroidery thread -3 ply thread. It is important to keep your stitches evenly spaced and placed.

Once you have stitch approximately 1/2 of your cloud you can start to lightly pad your cloud using stuffing (I used cotton wool). Repeat the same instructions with your right cloud.

3. Place your finished clouds onto your rainbow and once you are satisfied with their placement pin them into place.

4. Sew each cloud to the Rainbow using the blanket stitch (see photo).
Sew the back of the cloud to the back of the rainbow in a straight line across the bottom of each rainbow arch. You do not need to sew through every layer of felt, I have picked up each stitch through the red felt of the rainbow and the white felt backing the cloud. (by doing this you get lovely neat stitching which does not show through tothe from of the rainbow and cloud applique.

Now lets make the Raindrops ....

1. Begin by cutting the 7 x raindrop shapes from the print out and pin to the relevent colour felt.

2. Cut out each raindrop shape, you will you need to double the felt, so fold the felt in half and you will have and exact double of each raindrop. You should have 7 x raindrops (one of each colour of the rainbow).

3. Sew the two raindrop pieces of felt together, with the corresponding coloured thread; using the Blanket stitch (see the attached photo). By now you should be proficient in blanket sitich and have the neatest and most perfect raindrops of gratitude x.

To make it easier I started stitching from the top of the raindrop and ending back at the top of the raindrop. Do not sew in your end as this will be use to attach to the cloud and hand down as in the photo image (for stage 4)

4. You should have 7 sewn raindrops with a long thread attaqched to attach into the left cloud. I recommend you set out your raindrops (see photo below) to get an idea how you want your raindrops to hand from the cloud. See my arrangement as a guide, mix it up a bit !!

5. You can see from the above photo, that to get the raindrop effect some of the raindrops are sewn together first before being attached to the cloud. See the photo below as my example: πŸ‘‡

6. To attach raindrops to each other, you need to thread the needle with the raindrop which you want at the bottom. Sew the thread into the bottom of the corresponding raindrop, between the two pieces of felt and secure the ends by sewing back into the raindrop through the centre and cut the thread. See the photo below for guidance πŸ‘‡

7. Attach your raindrops to the left cloud using the same techniques as used when attanching the the raindrops to each other (as above photo) Make sure you are happy with your placement of each drop and sew the raindrops intothe left cloud, securing  each thread once you have adjusted the length of thread you want for each drop to hang from the cloud. See the photo below for guidance on how to (invisably) secure the threads at the back of the cloud.

8. Repeat the same progress for each raindrow and you are finished. You are now the proud owner of a beautiful rainbow, with clouds and raindrops. Fantastic !!

Finally... How to make the sunshine

1. Begin by cutting the two sunshine shapes from the print out and pin the round template to the yellow felt and the Sunshine rays shape to the orange felt.

2. Cut out both shapes; Please note I have not doubled the felt for this applique - However if you wish, you can make two of the 'sun rays' shape to add some backing to the sunshine.

3. Pin the yellow round shape to the orange sun rays shape. Sew the yellow circle to the orange using yellow thread and a running stitch (see the video above for instruction on how to sew the runing stitch)

4. Sew around the edge of the sun rays with yellow thread in blanket stitch (see video for how to sew the blanket stitch)

5. pin the sun into place on your rainbow

6. Then sew into place using the running stitch and any thread you have handy.

7. Finally ... sew your ribbon to the top of your rainbow so you can hang it up so you can share you rainbow with family , friends and neighbours. Be sure to send me your photo's and we can light up the internet with beautiful rainbows. You can share on my facebook page: www.facebook.com/craigloves2crochet
